The Terracotta Army

  1. The Terracotta Warriors are 8,000 figures of warriors found in a tomb dedicated to Emperor Qin Shi Huang. It's 33km away from Xi'an. They are considered World Heritage Site.
  2. This tomb is composed of three pits between 4 to 8 meters deep and it’s located on Mount Li between large gold and jade mines.
  3. This tomb was built in honor of the army’s emperor, who was called Qin Shi Huang. He was known as the First Emperor and while he ruled, he built the Great Wall of China to defend the Empire. 10 million workers died building this wall, which is more than 21,000 km long.
  4. Sima Qian was a historian who described the construction of the mausoleum in his book called Shiji. He said the tomb was surrounded by palaces, towers and valuable objects. 100 rivers were simulated with mercury inside the tomb and the roof was decorated with celestial bodies.
  5. The Terracotta Army is made up of 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. Until this day, they have found 7500 figures. In the first pit there were found 6,000 warriors. The fourth pit was found empty. In other pits there were found figures of  workers, acrobats, strongmen and musicians.
  6. The figures were made in real life size and they all have different characteristics: there can be young or old, low or high, etc.  Clothing indicated the various military ranks and all the figures were different. The hands and the heads were made separately and then the were stuck to the bodies.
